The UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory tests for the following classes of prohibited substances.

Anabolic androgenic steroids. This includes steroid hormones normally produced by the body (testosterone and precursor hormones) as well as synthetic derivatives of testosterone with potent anabolic (muscle building) effects (stanozolol/Winstrol and nandrolone/Deca-Durabolin).

Anti-estrogenic agents. These agents block the conversion of testosterone to female hormones (estrogens) or can prevent the body from responding to female hormones. These agents can reduce the unwanted side effects of anabolic steroids and enhance the availability of testosterone for anabolic effects.

Beta-2-agonists, such as salbutamol, often used to treat asthma and breathing aliments. One of these agents, clenbuterol, is taken to promote muscle growth and is not legally available for human use in the United States.

Beta-blockers, such as propranolol, lower blood pressure and can result in a competitive edge in sports such as archery and shooting.

Diuretics are often used as masking agents since they can enhance elimination of a banned substance from the body.

Hormones and Related Substances such as erythropoetin (EPO) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). EPO is a hormone normally produced by the body that stimulates red blood cell production, thereby increasing the delivery of oxygen to muscle tissue. hCG causes production of male hormones and is similar to administration of testosterone.

Glucocorticosteriods, such as prednisone and cortisone that are typically administered to reduce inflammation (other than topical use) are banned for performance and health reasons.

Stimulants, such as amphetamines, heighten the athlete’s ability to train at high levels, suppress appetite for weight loss, and can increase mental awareness and physical responsiveness.

Street drugs, including opiates, cocaine and marijuana.
